Barbara Kruger

Event Promotion & Typography

Influential graphic designers have their own classic style or trademark look. A true challenge is to capture this style in a way that honours and respects the original. This is true when designing advertisements for exhibitions, as this poster succeeds in doing.

The Making of Untitled

The Challenge

Only typography could be used, and so the challenge was to capture the designer in a unique way with purely typographic elements. This poster showcases Barbara Kruger, using Futura, her trademark typeface, to create the illusion of a room.

The Process

Multiple concepts inspired by Kruger's work were sketched out on paper, drawing inspiration from her past and present work. The chosen design was brought in to Abode Illustrator. The perspective and skew tools were particularly useful to give the design its optical illusion.

The colours were directly pulled from Barbara Kruger's work, giving the design her characteristic pop of red.

The Solution

The final poster takes inspiration from Kruger's life, describing her, her work, and her impact on the world as a designer. The optical illusion created by the text draws in the viewers eye, holding their attention and introducing them to the world of Barbara Kruger. This concept was then expanded into multiple formats to showcase its versitility.
