Perimeter's Turning Points

Perimeter Institute has achieved much since its inception, yet the general public isn't aware of the impact they have had in the world of physics. These illustrations help showcase that impact.

The Challenge

Commemorate 27 of Perimeter Institute's achievements in physics with illustrations that are accessible to the public and connected to eachother, while capturing complex physics theories and phenomenons.

The Process

For over a year, science writers had been working on the content, speaking with researchers on how best to capture their work. This information was abstracted, relying on simple shapes and metaphors. The colours were inspired by 1960s retro-travel ads, allowing for a high-contrast, bright palette. The illustrations were created in vector so they could be used at a variety of scales.

The Solution

Each illustration incorporated the same colour palette, some leaning warmer, others cooler. Inspiration was taken from the writing of each one. For example, the illustration for quantum causal inference pictured here uses a Rube Goldberg machine to showcase how a final outcome has multiple processes impacting its success or failure, simplifying this complex quantum physics idea.
